The Scottish violators are back with another crazily brutal title and their first full length annihilation that starts with a ‘Donnie Darko’ sample, and includes the now already departed Paul Catton of Medulla Nocte and Murder One infamy taking the main vocal shriek duties. For those who know not of the bludgeoning Co-exist you are in for a fair old rollercoaster ride of intensity and you should be scared because they will have yer kneecaps!
Remaining pretty damn relentless throughout, there are fair few similarities to Medulla Nocte at their best but with a few more grind references in the sound. Seering guitar riffs in ‘Surgeon without licence’ really do kick things in and as we progress, comparisons to Cephalic Carnage, newer Napalm Death, Aborted and Today is the Day seem fair. It’s so hard to sum Co-exist’s sound up totally as so many styles, paces and moods come through during the course of this.
‘Fear of sharks’ has huge groove sections and is a highlight for me, but there are many, as the whole spectrum of grind, thrash, tech, metal/core and groove based rhythms combine, clatter and batter at your senses, wrapped inside a crisp production. Later on, the sickeningly heavy ‘Blackmail’, and ‘Black Fuel’ stand out. Ah, the talk of the Buckvast!
More Scottish brilliance for us to beg for on bended and broken legs.
